Pakistan hosted an extraordinary session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), on October 15, 2025, where Dr. Mohammad Faisal, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, extended an exceptional and cordial welcome to the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez Velasco, along with international delegates from around the world.

Pakistan hosted an extraordinary session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), on October 15, 2025, where Dr. Mohammad Faisal, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, extended an exceptional and cordial welcome to the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez Velasco, along with international delegates from around the world.

Pakistan, a founding member of the IMO, has played a significant role in the organisation’s development and has been elected to the IMO Council on several occasions. Pakistan is now campaigning for council membership for the 2026–2027 term, emphasized Pakistan’s ongoing contributions, highlighting its cooperation in areas such as marine safety, ship recycling, and maritime security, including its participation in combined naval task force missions. Pakistan continues to uphold the principles of maritime safety, environmental protection, and technological advancement promoted by the IMO.
The IMO serves as the global regulatory authority for the shipping industry, creating a framework that ensures fairness, safety, and sustainability across all nations involved in maritime trade. Its mission fosters innovation, efficiency, and accountability in an industry that serves as the backbone of international commerce. Shipping is the lifeline of global trade and the welfare of nations, and the IMO plays a pivotal role in safeguarding that lifeline.

Pakistan High Commissioner His Exc. Dr. Mohammad Faisal, supported by Pakistan’s Military Adviser and senior naval representative, Commodore Jawad KHAWAJAH , led the hosting and presentation of Pakistan’s campaign with professionalism and dedication. During his address at the IMO headquarters in London, His Exc. Dr. Faisal delivered a compelling advocacy speech on behalf of Pakistan, reaffirming the country’s pledge to advance international cooperation, maritime safety, decarbonization goals, and the welfare of seafarers.
In his remarks, His Exc. Dr. Faisal recalled Pakistan’s historical role as one of the IMO’s founding members and highlighted the nation’s five previous terms as a council member. He emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to promoting professional training, technological innovation, and capacity building within the maritime community. He also expressed gratitude for the IMO’s initiatives that have strengthened global maritime collaboration.
In his remarks, His Exc. Dr. Faisal recalled Pakistan’s historical role as one of the IMO’s founding members and highlighted the nation’s five previous terms as a council member. Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez Vela's o, in response, expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s continued engagement and recalled his visit to Pakistan in 2024, where he witnessed the country’s maritime potential and strategic importance firsthand. He commended Pakistan for its active role in supporting the IMO’s mission and recognized the nation’s growing blue economy as a promising contributor to regional and global trade.
Shazada Hayat praised the Pakistani nation and the overseas community for their pride in the high commission’s efforts. He extended commendations to Dr. Mohammad Faisal, Commodore Jawad Khawaja, and the dedicated team at the Pakistan High Commission, including Deputy High Commissioner Haseeb Aziz, Press and Media Minister Ali Nawaz Malik, and Economic Minister Dr. Samina Zarah. Their tireless coordination and professionalism were described as instrumental to the success of Pakistan’s IMO council campaign.
The event concluded with renewed optimism for Pakistan’s continued leadership within the IMO framework, reaffirming the nation’s unwavering dedication to promoting maritime safety, environmental protection, and international cooperation on the global stage.
